"This morning's conference was great!  It was a wide range of participants on the panels and that was a great way to hear a wide view of options and ideas from the panelists!  Kevin Hancock gets my vote for most open, honest and helpful answers to questions. He was outstanding and his thoughts today were very heartfelt and honest.  Take away the layers of "facade" and discuss the truth of what it's like and how you face the issuers."

Learn About Our Peer Advisory Groups & Sign-up for 2018!

When: Monday, December 4th, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Where: Easy Day, 725 Broadway, South Portland

Family-owned businesses make up over eighty percent of Maine’s businesses.  In any five-year period nearly 40% of family businesses will pass the baton to the next generation.  Given these statics the IFOB has created several Next Generation Peer Advisory Groups.

Join us for our “Next Gen Social Mixer” – with a Twist! We’ll be gathering at Easy Day in South Portland for an evening of socializing and bowling! (those who plan on bowling will want to arrive 15 minutes prior in order to be fitted for shoes.) Throughout the program, join the IFOB executive director, Catherine Wygant Fossett , Janet Cole Cross of Cole Cross Connections (who leads these groups) and fellow Next Geners to learn about these Next Gen groups and events. Bring your spouse or a guest.

Janet created and facilitates these groups in order for members to learn and grow from each other.  Sharing her perspective as a 3rd Generation in her family’s business (Cole’s Express), she first worked outside then inside and also consulted to Maine family businesses and now she coaches the Next Generation.

Peer advisory groups are small, confidential discussion groups of about 8-10 members that meet regularly and are facilitated by one or more local family business advisors. The group allows individuals to share experiences and learn from each other in a safe and open environment.  These groups are for those actively working in a family business or who are interested in joining the family business, are IFOB members and in non-competing businesses. Ideally, only one member of a family will be in each peer group.

Members self-direct their topics exploring family business subjects of mutual interest, provide accountability and feedback, define issues of importance for each member, and discuss what to do (and not to do) in day-to-day interactions among family, owners, employees, and board members in order to make family leadership a competitive advantage.

Below is a breakdown of the Peer Advisory Groups for 2018 based on levels of experience in a family business. These groups generally meet six times a year starting in January.
