"This morning's conference was great!  It was a wide range of participants on the panels and that was a great way to hear a wide view of options and ideas from the panelists!  Kevin Hancock gets my vote for most open, honest and helpful answers to questions. He was outstanding and his thoughts today were very heartfelt and honest.  Take away the layers of "facade" and discuss the truth of what it's like and how you face the issuers."

Join the Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB) for the 2019 Maine Family Business Awards. Hosted by Cindy Williams, NEWS CENTER Maine anchor, with Shawn Gorman, Executive Chairman of L.L.Bean, as the keynote speaker. Now in its 20th year of recognizing family businesses with the awards, we present them in partnership with MEMIC.

Shawn Gorman executive chairman of L.L. Bean will be the keynote speaker. Shawn Gorman, great-grandson of company founder L.L. Bean, was appointed Chairman of the Board of L.L.Bean in May of 2013, and was named Executive Chairman in 2016.

Shawn’s L.L.Bean career began in 1991, when he joined the company’s marketing department as an analyst. He went on to hold a number of leadership positions in Marketing, International, E-Commerce, Partnership Marketing and Creative. His accomplishments include introducing the company to online and email marketing, integrating L.L.Bean’s brand strategies across channels and leading L.L.Bean’s cobranded credit card program – one of the most successful in the country.

Since its inception, 89 businesses have been recognized for various categories of excellence. This year we had 157 nominations, 32 semi-finalists, 25 finalists and we will announce the 7 winners live at the awards show!

One comment, may best capture the essence of the awards, and in many ways describes the Institute: “While applying for the awards, we discovered a lot about ourselves…and that alone made the effort worthwhile.”

The gala attracts family businesses large and small with an audience of over 400. The Maine Family Business Awards is a celebration that pays more than just recognition; it serves as a vehicle for networking and opening up all shades of possibilities for families seeking to grow their business.

The awards celebrate the accomplishments of small and large businesses that exemplify the following criteria:

· Business success
· Positive business and family linkages
· Contributions to the community and industry
· Family participation
· Work environment
· Communication
· Innovative business practices or strategies

Awards are presented in seven categories:

· Renys Large Business Award (25 or more employees)
· Chalmers Insurance Group Customer Service Award
· Holiday Inn By The Bay First Generation Award
· People’s United Bank Innovation & Technology Award
· Shep Lee Community Service Award
· Maddy Corson Small Business Award (fewer than 25 employees)
· Cumberland Crossing by OceanView Environmental Leadership Award

To mark the Institute’s 25th anniversary, we will present our first Lifetime Achievement Award to Maddy Corson. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated sustained success, leadership and innovation in his or her own family business, to the IFOB, and to the broader community.

Maddy is the quintessential example of what it means to be a strong leader and advocate for Maine businesses. It only seems fitting that this award is given out on the 20th anniversary of the MFBAs, which all started as an idea from Maddy two decades ago and has recognized 89 businesses and counting. Maddy was fourth generation of her family business, Guy Gannett Communications.
