"This morning's conference was great!  It was a wide range of participants on the panels and that was a great way to hear a wide view of options and ideas from the panelists!  Kevin Hancock gets my vote for most open, honest and helpful answers to questions. He was outstanding and his thoughts today were very heartfelt and honest.  Take away the layers of "facade" and discuss the truth of what it's like and how you face the issuers."

Family Business: Trends, Surveys, and Current Realities

 Watch Recording Here

The IFOB is a member of the Family Business Alliance, an international association of university-affiliated family business centers with approximately 50 centers dispersed throughout the U.S. and Canada. They meet annually to gather center directors and staff to delve into current issues pertaining to running a successful family business program.

This year the meeting was going to be hosted by the Ivey School of Business in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. With Covid-19, they have transitioned this to a virtual conference and are inviting our members to two programs on June 4 that may be of interest:  Family Business:  Trends, Surveys and Current Realities and Resiliency – Challenges Across Generations featuring our own Anne Hussey from Hussey Seating (six-generation family business), Jennifer and Wendy Yuengling from Yuengling Brewery (America’s Oldest Brewery) and Benco Dental (the largest privately-owned full-service distributor of dental products and services).

During the Trends, Surveys, and Current Realities session, we will discuss how the COVID-19 crisis represents many immediate and long-term concerns for family businesses. Using survey data from two recent studies, we will explore the 2020 Family Enterprise USA Owners Survey, as well as more recent ownership intel collected by Banyan Global.

The 2020 Family Enterprise USA Survey is particularly important given that we are in the midst of a historic election year. As well, the FEUSA survey offers longitudinal data, having been collected annually since 2013. Banyan Global, a family business advisory firm located in Boston, Massachusetts, has been sampling business owners across the globe to take the pulse of family businesses and gather practical advice for managing through this stage of the crisis. The survey results will be discussed in detail during this webinar.

Panelists:

  • Josh Baron, Co-Founder, and Partner, Banyan Global

  • Patricia Soldano, President, Family Enterprise USA

  • Judy Lin Walsh, Principal, Banyan Global

Facilitator:

  • Daniel G. Van Der Vliet, the John and Dyan Smith Executive Director of Family Business, Smith Family Business Initiative
