"I attend a fair amount of networking events.  This Women in Family Business was one of the best I've ever been to! I'm a big fan of the speaker, Susan Dench anyway, but wanted you to know I loved the energy and what we learned!"

Calendar

We have over 41 programs scheduled for 2017!  Our programming theme is "Growing and Protecting your Family Business".  With this in mind, we've developed a number of educational programs including two 3-part series called the "ART of Family Business" and "HR for the Family Business".  We will also have our Affinity Groups, Family Business Spotlights, Socials and more!  New for 2017, we're inviting the men to two of our "Women in Family Business" programs that are open to all.  The ones in "pink" below are still reserved for the women.  Our Maine Family Business Awards is on Wednesday, May 17th and we expect over 350 in attendance!

Below is a diagram that spells out all our programs for 2017. Please Note:  Open programs include all family business members, associate partner members and “future” members (i.e. non-members).  At the Associate Partner level of membership, certain programs may be unavailable and open only to family business members (Examples: CEO Central, Women’s Leadership Forum, and Next Generation discussions.)  These programs are by reservation only with Catherine Wygant Fossett, the executive director.

Below is a flip book calender from July - December, 2017 with all our programs.  We will update the online calendar (scroll down below) as we progress throughout the year. Come join us!

Back by popular demand, we'll be led by Matt Gaynor and Nonesuch's new PGA professional, Jim Fairbanks.

Did you know, the PGA of America comprises 27,000 men and women professionals with one singular goal in mind - to make the game of golf more enjoyable for you?

We’ll break into small groups based on your ability from beginner to expert and work on techniques to hone your skill at whatever level.  If you have clubs, please bring them, if not, we will have plenty to choose from.  Afterwards there will be plenty of time for networking and refreshments.

The goal of this program is to offer instruction, golf and understanding of the game in a fun and social environment.  One-on-one instruction will be available both on the golf course and driving range and will be set up to meet the specific needs of all individuals.

Nonesuch River Golf will also be offering a Super Twilight membership for $150 per person, 7 days a week from 5:30 p.m. to dark for the season.  Contact Matt Gaynor, PGA Head Golf Professional at 207.883.0007 or matt@noneshuchgolf.com for more details.

The 203-acre facility in Southern Maine features a meticulously maintained 18-hole public championship golf course, a modern 2,500 square-foot clubhouse, a full-size practice range and two putting greens, as well as a golf academy with professional PGA Instruction.  Their staff is experienced, friendly, and professional.

The club’s namesake, The Nonesuch River, runs directly through the golf course property, creating “wetland areas” which support a variety of plant and animal species. During the design and construction process, they were careful to maintain valuable wildlife habitat important to local moose, wild turkey, fox and deer populations. They worked closely with state and local officials to limit our environmental impact on the beautiful forest and river area. Their maintenance philosophy is to continue to provide an ongoing, thriving wildlife habitat throughout the wetlands and forested areas. Nonesuch is unique in that there is no development on the golf course except for the clubhouse and golf-related amenities. It is truly a golf course situated in its natural environment.

    COST:   Wine & Nine
    Members = $175 for all 6 sessions

"Finding your Voice in a Family-Owned Business..."
    We're inviting the men too!

Join the Women in Family-Business for a fun educational afternoon on “Finding Your Voice!”  Speaking of which, we’ve heard from our male counterparts who have wanted to be included in our “Women in Family-Business” events so new for 2017, we’re inviting the men.

We orginally were scheduled to kick off our series with this program called “Finding Your Voice” in February however a Nor'easter caused us to move it to the fall.

So we'll try it again here...

We’ll learn from IFOB Associate Partners, Dana Morris-Jones, PhD and John Shorb about presenting at meetings, leading a team, coaching direct reports, and speaking out about community and other issues, whether with a small or large group.

Dana Morris-Jones, Principal and co-founder of The Delphi Group, Inc., assists organizations, groups and individuals to achieve their goals by clarifying direction, aligning strategy with processes, mobilizing talent and inspiring commitment.  Dana’s clients have included public utilities, for-profit corporations and small closely held firms, state and federal government agencies and non-profits.

With her partner John Shorb, they provide an array of services, including strategic planning, change leadership, team development and executive coaching, always with the objective of improving organizational results.  Also trained as a mediator, Dana incorporates best practices for resolving organizational differences in her work. Her expertise in this field has led to the development of a proprietary model which is the basis for her book, The Power of Difference published in 2016. Dana earned a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

John Shorb is a Principal and co-founder of The DELPHI Group, Inc.  His extensive experience with both private and public sector organizations incorporates collaborative processes to diagnose needs, build skills, and facilitate results-oriented strategic change.  John’s clients range from small family-owned businesses to mid-sized manufacturing operations, fortune 50 corporations, government agencies and academic institutions focusing on coaching managers, aligning systems & practices with mission/vision, building teams.  John is a faculty member of The NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science and has presented at numerous regional and national conferences.

Dana and John will tailor our workshop to what each of you want to learn about finding your voice!

"10 Leadership Practices that Positively Impact Employee Motivation and Profitability"
A Next Gen Open Program for all!

Presented by:  IFOB members, Vince Pelote, da Vinci Consulting, Dottie Chalmers and Steve Cote, Chalmers Insurance Group

    Participants in this program will:

    • Gain a deep understanding of the link between leadership practices and employee motivation
    • Walk away with common sense techniques that can be used back in the workplace
This program will showcase the approach and leadership practices that Chalmers Insurance Group has implemented during the past two years as they look to create a highly motivated workforce. The presenters will also share their rationale for creating a highly motivated workforce and current trends.

Organizational brands are more transparent than ever. Current research data and trends show us that star performers (high performing and highly motivated) and new graduates are seeking out and selecting organizations based upon the brand of the organization. The brand that they are looking for includes meaningful work (innovative and transformative) and opportunities to develop. Stars want to work with other stars and they want to know that you are intentional about supporting their development.

    Current National Trends:

    • Recent data released by Culture Amp clearly shows that development opportunities and leadership have 3-4 times a greater impact on the retention of star employees than their relationship with their immediate boss.
    • There are also recent compelling trends that suggest that organizations need to do much more than "engage" if they want to recruit and retain high potentials. The word "engagement" often limits our thinking.

Join us as we discuss this very important topic!

    & Sign-up for 2018!

    When: Thursday, December 7, 2017
    Where: TBD

Family-owned businesses make up over eighty percent of Maine’s businesses.  In any five-year period nearly 40% of family businesses will pass the baton to the next generation.  Given these statics the IFOB has created several Next Generation Peer Advisory Groups.

Join us for our “Next Gen Holiday Social” to meet with the IFOB executive director, Catherine Wygant Fossett , Janet Cole Cross of Cole Cross Connections (who leads these groups) and fellow Next Geners  to learn about these programs. Janet created and facilitates these groups in order for members to learn and grow from each other.  Sharing her perspective as a 3rd Generation in her family’s business (Cole’s Express), she first worked outside then inside and also consulted to Maine family businesses and now she coaches the Next Generation.

Peer advisory groups are small, confidential discussion groups of about 8-10 members that meet regularly and are facilitated by one or more local family business advisors.  The group allows individuals to share experiences and learn from each other in a safe and open environment.  These groups are for those actively working in a family business or who are interested in joining the family business, are IFOB members and in non-competing businesses.  Ideally, only one member of a family will be in each peer group.

Members self-direct their topics exploring family business subjects of mutual interest, provide accountability and feedback, define issues of importance for each member, and discuss what to do (and not to do) in day-to-day interactions among family, owners, employees, and board members in order to make family leadership a competitive advantage.

Below is a breakdown of the proposed Peer Advisory Groups for 2018 based on levels of experience in a family business. These groups generally meet six times a year starting in January. For more information contact Catherine Fossett at catherine@fambusiness.org or 207-798-2667.

NEXT GENERATION: Intermediate – Next Generation members who are working in positions with limited or new management exposure in the family business.  Or who have recently joined their family business or are thinking of starting a career in their family business.
