Family Business Spotlight Series at the IFOB

The Institute for Family-Owned Business's (IFOB) goals are to be the:
         …premier resource for family-run businesses in Maine,
         …predominant source of outreach programs for family-owned businesses
         …recognized expert in and networking resource for inimitable family-business issues.

Welcome to the "Family Business Spotlight." Each year, we feature two family businesses who are members of the Institute and have a deep commitment to supporting family-owned businesses in Maine.  Each family is highlighted on our website, on Facebook, Instagram, in emails, on calendar websites, and LinkedIn.  We continue this series for 2022 with two family businesses, The Nonantum Resort in the Spring, and Warren's Office Supplies in the Fall. Both dates are TBD at this time.

    2019 Family Business Spotlights:

    We kicked off the 2019 Family Business Spotlight series with the Pemberton's, and their team from Pemberton & Associates in Yarmouth, ME for our spring highlight. Derek and Susan Pemberton are the second generation partners. This family business has been operating since 1994. 

    In the fall we highlighted Mowfield Farm, a country estate used for weddings and other special event functions.  While Mowfield Farm was recently established in 2011 by it's owners Joanne and Greg Fryer, the house is nearly 200 years old.

    2018 Family Business Spotlights:

    We kicked off the 2018 Family Business Spotlight series with Heather and Nathan Sanborn, Kailey Partin, and their team from Rising Tide Brewing Company. Heather and Nathan Sanborn opened Rising Tide Brewing Company's first location on Industrial Way in 2010. Now, Rising Tide Brewing Company is proud to employ over 20 people, has just completed another expansion, and Heather is now a State Representative.

    On October 15, we celebrated our second Family Business Spotlight with Greg Sweetser, the fifth generation owner of Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards. This family-owned farm, specializing in apples, was founded in 1812 and was the winner of the 2010 Maddy Corson Small Business Award for the Maine Family Business Awards.

    2017 Family Business Spotlights:

    We kicked off the 2017 Family Business Spotlight series with Cindy Andrews and her team from The House of Lights.  The business dates back to 1918 with the start of Holmes Electrical Supply Company. Today it is led by Cindy who is the 4th generation.  The family showroom has been providing the community with top quality lighting and home accents at affordable prices since 1955. 

    On October 2, 2017 was our last Family Business Spotlight were Planet Dog hosted "Let's engage and play with our four legged friends!" The business is globally recognized as designers and developers of innovative, high quality, award-winning dog products that enhance the lifestyle people share with their 4-legged best friends. They have grown the company based their core values and commitment to their mission: to amuse, explore, support, innovate, create, educate, celebrate, and “philanthropate”... all in the name of the dog.

    2016 Family Business Spotlights:

    On Monday, April 11, 2016 we celebrated “April in Paris - Fall in Love with Family Businesses:  Rejuvenation and Growth” featuring Opus Consulting Group, a business management and corporate strategy firm founded in 2009 by Jacques and Patricia Santucci in Portland. Through business acceleration, corporate renewal and exit strategy services, Opus has an excellent track record in helping clients and businesses achieve their goals.

    On Monday, November 7, 2016 we “Discovered the Chalmers unique S.H.I.P. experience” featuring the Chalmers Insurance Group.  A fourth generation, family-owned business headquartered in western Maine. Their mission is simple.  They provide quality insurance products and financial security to their community-based neighbors with personal and friendly service. Their core values that drive everything they do includes S – Service      H – Honesty    I – Involvement  P - Passion.

    2015 Family Business Spotlights:

    Quarter 1 (Jan/Feb/Mar) – Volk Packaging Corporation – Biddeford
    We kicked-off this series with Volk Packaging Corporation on Monday, March 30th when we celebrated the family and tried out the Volk's now famous "Corrugated Bocce Ball Olympics" complete with trophies at their facility in Biddeford! 

    Quarter 2 (Apr/May/June) – Hussey Seating Company – North Berwick
    Our next exciting event was on Monday, June 22nd at Hussey Seating Company in their Product Showroom.  We gave away "The Best Seat In The House" in a game of musical chairs where three lucky contestants won a Portable Clarin Seat with a Patriots, Red Sox or Sea Dogs logo.  We also heard great insights from Tim Hussey, CEO, and toured the Hussey Seating Company Museum.

    Quarter 3 (July/Aug/Sept) – Gifford’s Ice Cream – Auburn Stand
    Our third in our series was on Monday, August 31st at Gifford's Ice Cream stand in Auburn for a great "Ice Cream Social".  We heard from the next generation on the successes of their expansion in the mid-Atlantic and we had plenty of "next geners" in waiting as lots of kids gathered for ice cream, games and fun.  We also learned of the lucky winner for the family vacation in Maine for the "Got My Gifford's" Sweepstakes which had over 32,000 entries!

    Quarter 4 (Oct/Nov/Dec) – Capozza Tile & Flooring Company - Portland
    Our final in the series for 2015 was on Monday, November 9th at Capozza Tile & Floor Covering Center in Portland.  We heard from the third generation about the new initiatives they have been implementing in their family business and we learned how to “Design Your Own Bathroom with the Latest Tile Trends!."
